The UCLA Medical Center Kidney Transplant Suite’s conference room and group spaces incorporated numerous hard finishes (e.g., tile, wood, glass) that result in excessive reverberation and unintelligible speech. The exam rooms and doctor offices need to provide doctor/patient confidential speech privacy to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). An analysis of sound isolation, room acoustics, and HVAC noise resulted in recommendations and acoustical solutions to mitigate speech privacy and intelligibility concerns.
